Matthew Sweet Suffers “Debilitating” Stroke, GoFundMe Nears $300K

Singer-songwriter Matthew Sweet suffered a significant stroke late on Saturday night (October 12) while he was on tour in Toronto with Hanson. The veteran musician behind the Nineties alt-rock hit singles like “Girlfriend” and “I’ve Been Waiting,” was admitted to Toronto Western Hospital “where he was put into excellent care and taken out of immediate danger,” according to Sweet’s longtime manager, Russell Carter. “He is now on a long, difficult road to recovery,” Carter continued in his statement. “He cannot perform for the foreseeable future.”

Sweet has been transferred to a rehabilitation center in his home of Omaha where he will undergo therapy. Carter said that over the coming weeks, Sweet will require “around-the-clock care and therapy,” followed by months of treatment and rehabilitation. Sweet’s family set up a GoFundMe to help the musician pay for his medical bills and future treatment, with nearly $300,000 raised since news of Sweet’s stroke was first shared publicly.
